Grama Panchayat

Peringottukurissi Grama Panchayat is situated in Kuzhalmannam Block of Alathur Taluk in Palakkad District. The Grama Panchayat extends over the two villages of Peringottukurissi I and Peringottukurissi II and has an area of 31.45 square kilometres. The boundaries of the Panchayat are Kottayi Grama Panchayat on the eastern side, Bharathapuzha River on the northern side, Thiruvilwamala Grama Panchayat on the western side, and Kuthannur and Tarur Grama Panchayats on the southern side.

Choolanur, Peringottukurissi and Paruthippulli Grama Panchayats were formed in 1954. When the Panchayats were reorganised in accordance with the Kerala Panchayat Act and Rules of 1962, these three Grama Panchayats were amalgamated to form a single Panchayat named Peringottukurissi. In the 1963 election, D. Narayanan Namboothiripad became the first President of the Panchayat.

Peringottukurissi was one of the Kurisshis among the 18 Arakurisshis that existed to the south of the Bharathapuzha River. Before the formation of the State of Kerala on a linguistic basis, this region was part of the erstwhile Madras State.

Peringottukurissi Grama Panchayat encompasses several areas bearing ancient place names, including Paruthippulli, Pilappulli, Muduppullithara, Chennankad, Oduvankad, Kundukad, Chettiyankad, Thuvakkad, Thachankad, Iruvulankad Kotta, Kotta Chantha, Thotakkara, Ettudi, Perumala, Manimala, Maniyanpara, Naduvathuppara Mandapathikavu, Mannuvettumada, Thrithamara, Vadakkumpara, Kizhakkumpara, Meppadam, Chirappadam, Mariyel, Mekkonom, Pannikkulambu, Vaalkkumpu, Maruthoni, Thonikkundu, Aniyathkundu, Kunnathupuramba and Thalluparamba. Thus, the Peringottukurissi Grama Panchayat comprises numerous areas with rich historical heritage and ancient place names.
